For a long time, Jarrod Cooper wouldn't tell anyone at the Oakland Animal Shelter what he did for a living. He wasn't there as an NFL player, as the anti-Michael Vick. ... he arrived at the shelter like any other volunteer. The staff members didn't ask too many questions about the heavily muscled young man with elaborate tattoos, but they did find him intriguing.

BRIDGEPORT — There are better days ahead for the canines and felines housed at the city's decrepit animal shelter on Asylum Street. The city's new state-of-the-art animal shelter on Evergreen Street is expected to open in about two weeks, according to officials.

A Monroe family asks for help finding new homes for two dozen dogs -- who can no longer be guaranteed a good life. . . . It turns out that an elderly woman has been breeding dogs at the Monroe home for years, but is now in a nursing home. She can no longer care for the animals, so her son is voluntarily giving them to the SPCA to be put up for adoption.

The grant allows the ARL of Boston to develop the first-in-the-nation Center for Shelter Dogs. Once completed, the Center for Shelter Dogs at the Animal Rescue League of Boston will provide a model for improving the welfare and eventual placement of homeless dogs cared for by humane organizations, animal control facilities and rescue groups in Massachusetts and throughout the nation.
