Norwalk Petco to Adopt Out, Not Sell, Rabbits

The Hop-A-Long Hollow is partnering with Petco in their Norwalk, CT location on the education and adoption of rabbits. All rabbits that will be at the Norwalk Petco will be provided by and for adoption only through The Hop-A-Long Hollow. The Petco Foundation has kindly provided the Hex in which the rabbits from the Hollow are seen in the store.

The Hop-A-Long Hollow is a Norwalk-based licensed non-profit organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and education of rabbits and other small animals. Last year alone, nearly 150 rabbits found their ways into the Hollow, were spayed/neutered, and adopted out to indoor only homes as litter-box trained and free roaming house pets.

With the Hollow's new partnership with Petco, the Hollow looks forward to both the exposure and adoption of more rabbits that have been tossed outside or dumped at other shelters due to lack of education and neglect. THe partnership with Petco will also help to educate the public on a much higher level on the proper care for their house rabbits.

"Humans and these wonderful and inquisitive creatures can coexist happily together once we get all the kinks worked out and come to a better understanding of what rabbits are really all about," said Brandee LaCava, Vice President of The Hop-A-Long Hollow.

The Hollow currently has over 60 rabbits available for adoption. All rabbits are spayed/neutered before going to their new homes. Spaying and neutering a rabbit not only curbs their hormonal behavior (lunging/spraying) which happens at about 4-6 months of age, but it also helps to increase their life span dramatically since the number-one killer of rabbits over the age of 4 is ovarian and testicular cancer. The number-two killer of rabbits living indoors is Gut-Stasis. Gut-Stasis is a blockage that usually occurs from a poor diet not including hay. Hay is needed to keep fur moving through the intestines.
