Leo's Club Helps Animal Shelter
Location: Milford
The members of the Leo's Club at Foundation School in Milford ran a very successful food and donation drive to benefit the Milford Animal Shelter. The club presented the donations to Animal Control Officer and Shelter Director, Pat Liptak, during a special meeting on February 2, 2007. The club collected a large amount of food and other donations to help Milford's homeless pets, including a financial donation to assist with the shelter's building fund. The fund will be used to add an infirmary and more space for the City's pet food bank onto the shelter. Pictured are Leo's Club officers with Pat Liptak (2nd from right) and Joelle Coretti of CT Pet Projects (right).

Power Walking...
Location: Milford, CT
Submitted by Joelle: While volunteering doesn't just mean walking dogs, it's my favorite part. You can't beat knowing you're adding some fun to an otherwise yucky day at the animal shelter for these beautiful babies. And the exercise is certainly a perk! Doughbee is a Rotti/Shepherd mix that was dropped off at the Milford Animal Shelter with his sister Bandit, both as sweet as could be. Bandit got adopted within a week and Doughbee maybe another week after that. All was happy and well. 2 weeks later, Doughbee was back. I couldn't believe it. I was happy to walk him again but so disappointed that he was no longer "home." We walked for about 20 minutes - he's so easy going on a leash. It was a beautiful day so we didn't go inside right after the walk. I took a seat on a railing at the edge of the park and Doughbee inched closer to me and rested his head in my lap. He sat completely still and content while I pet his head and scratched behind his ears. It was all I could do to leave the shelter without him that afternoon. Upon my next visit, I learned that a retired couple who had just lost their shepherd had come to visit him. They met him and went home to think it over. Less than 24 hours later he was laying quietly in their back seat on his way home. He's a spoiled only child who will get all the love and attention he deserves... but I still think about him every day. (Pictured: Stephanie, another Milford Shelter volunteer, and Doughbee)

Pet Project University
Location: Bridgeport, CT
Nicole and Joe were the first two University volunteers to sign up with CT Pet Projects - they are charter members of the Pet Squad! They are shown here assisting with a Saturday afternoon "photo shoot" of adoptable dogs at the Bridgeport Animal Shelter... the Shelter houses many dogs at any given time and to promote them on web sites like Petfinder is one of the best ways to get them forever homes! Since they began their volunteer efforts with CTPP, they've begun to gather their fellow students into an official animal welfare club on campus. Their first meeting attracted more than 60 (SIXTY!) interested students. Way to go, Nicole and Joe!

Webmasters, Take Note!
Location: Milford, CT
For quite some time, the Milford Animal Shelter did not have active Petfinder listings for their adoptable dogs. The animals were certainly well cared for, advertised and often adopted very quickly. But with the increasing popularity of online pet searches via sites like Petfinder, it seemed appropriate to give Milford's shelter pets the same exposure. A volunteer (who prefers to remain anonymous) decided to take on the project and updates Milford's listings on a weekly basis. Pictured here is Ernie, a spunky little Yorkie mix, with Nancy, another Milford Shelter volunteer. Ernie's Petfinder listing got more than 1,200 visits in less than one week's time!!! Obviously he is now happily playing his days away at his new home. This is great evidence that many people are looking to adopt their pets, not buy them in a pet store. (Why shouldn't you by a pup (or kitten) from a pet store? Read about puppy mills here, courtesy of the Humane Society of the United States.)

A True Companion
Location: Bridgeport, CT
Jack is retired, lives alone and was looking for a canine companion (and his grandchildren wanted a dog in the family too!). He found who he thought was the perfect pup on Petfinder only to learn he'd already been promised to another family. CTPP founder Joelle met this little guy (pictured) by accident while volunteering at the Bridgeport Animal Shelter one Saturday morning. He was so quiet and sweet in his kennel - very scared and very confused - and he looked JUST like Jack's Petfinder pup! He was well trained before coming to the shelter because he sat for treats and he "held it" for so long in his kennel that he peed for days when Joelle took him for a walk. Thank goodness for cell phones - while out for that walk, she called Jack's family and they came to meet Max. Max went home with them not even an hour later. Max is Jack's buddy and his guardian. He sleeps with him at night and follows him during the day. When the kids want to play or Jack wants to walk, Max will certainly oblige and when Jack is sick, Max sits by his side and helps him heal. Joelle says "I never volunteered in Bridgeport on a Saturday before. I wasn't sure why I thought to go that day. Then I met Max. Nothing can describe the feeling of seeing that sweet boy jump into the car and go home. We formed CT Pet Projects that afternoon."
